Welcome to the official website of
The Horseman's Word Heritage Lottery Funded project
This website gives full details about the project, the project team, and the range, depth and focus of our discoveries.
In addition you can access voice recordings and film clips. You will also find useful links to relevant organisations, bibliographies and information of all kinds about this fascinating subject.
The Fenland area is fortunate to have a rich cultural heritage related to horses and horse keeping. From prehistoric times to the present-day the Fens have always been horse country. Horses and horsemen have helped to shape the landscape we now inhabit.
As well as documenting the social history of horse keeping, we have investigated the myths, magic and drama of the 'golden age' of the heavy horse. With the aid of our Heritage Lottery Fund grant, this fascinating strand of rural history has been documented and preserved for future generations
We hope that you will discover a wealth of information relating to the Fenland traditions of heavy horsekeeping, and the men and women who have devoted themselves to the preservation of these 'gentle giants' of the equine world.
